HOYER and BARTER are testing LNG powered vehicles
The purpose of testing carried out in Poland by HOYER Poland is demonstrating the potential of liquefied petroleum gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel for heavy transport. BARTER is the co-organizer of the project.
As highlighted by the organizers – the EU and local regulations, as well as growing public awareness encourage to use in the long-distance heavy transport the alternative fuels with less or minimal negative environmental impact. The tests carried out by HOYER and BARTER are designed to demonstrate the impact of gaseous fuel used for such transport on the environment, and to see in practice the range and fuel consumption in different road conditions. The latest Iveco Stralis NP400 cars, powered by methane fuels and designed for use in long haul operations, are being tested for the first time in Poland.
– Our customer, a global leader in gas, has taken a strategic decision to reduce CO2 emissions and is considering the use of LNG-powered transport tractors in the area of transport services – said Rafał Bomba, the President of HOYER Poland – HOYER Poland, as one of the leaders in the market of dangerous goods, follows innovative technologies. We are the first in Poland to undertake the testing of the LNG-powered tractor in the ADR specification (European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). Our tests – in addition to reducing CO2 emissions – are to confirm actual cost savings. Alternative fuel must be competitive in this regard with diesel. We want to check Iveco’s declarations during the tests, which argue that LNG-powered tractors are 6-10 percent cheaper in operation.
The tests are carried out using a special, rented LNG refueling station from Germany. BARTER S.A. supplies the gas fuel and infrastructure necessary for refueling.
– Refueling of LNG is carried out by a distributor equipped with a safety specialist gas nozzle; The system equipped with a cryogenic pump and flow meters is responsible for proper fuel supply- all this allows you to measure the amount of refueled gas – says Andrzej
Leonczuk, head of LNG development at Barter S.A. – The operator will receive a receipt confirming the amount of refueled fuel at the end.
The new Iveco tractor is equipped with a 400 horsepower Cursor 9 engine and two LNG cryogenic tanks of 540 liters each, which can travel up to 1500 km.
– In other configurations it is possible to use only one LNG tank or simultaneously LNG tank and CNG battery (compressed natural gas) – explains Andrzej Leonczuk – This allows you to carry out easily even the furthest international transport.
Gas-powered vehicles are a real alternative to diesel-powered vehicles, they only emit much less pollutants into the atmosphere, they are also much quieter- reduce road noise – they are environmentally and locally friendly, and they are economical in operation- says Bogdan Rogaski, the President of Barter S.A. – Thanks to the modern technology of LNG the refueling process is very simple and fast, now comparable to the speed of the diesel refueling. The international corporations and some large operators pay much attention to the low carbon supply chain because their customers want this- so there is a trend in the transport industry to create such a chain.
Another important advantage of alternative fuels is also allowing them to be used in the latest ADR convention update, which significantly increases the potential for LNG use.
The tractor and LNG tests take place in different locations and in different road conditions all over Poland. The first show of the equipment and the tractor took place on the CARGO test track in Jaworzno at the end of May.
